Plant & Transport Manager

Job description
We are currently looking for a Plant and Transport Manager in Aberdeen, where the primary responsibility is to oversee and manage the plant equipment and transportation fleet within all areas of the Company (both internal and externally hired) to ensure the efficient and safe operation of all plant machinery and vehicles, while optimising use, minimising downtime and maintaining compliance with relevant regulations. The role involves coordinating with various teams, including project/contracts managers, maintenance staff and drivers, to support construction projects and ensure the timely delivery of equipment and materials.

Responsibilities

Main tasks:
• Develop and implement comprehensive strategies for managing and maintaining plant equipment, including heavy machinery, tools, and specialised construction equipment.
• Plan and execute preventive maintenance schedules, inspections, and repairs to ensure optimal performance and longevity of equipment.
• Source and order plant and transport in liaison with Procurement department.
• Participate in the purchase of plant and transport items as required.
• Arrange for delivery of plant/transport/equipment to site, monitor usage, arrange for return off site/off hire and inspect as appropriate.
• Maintain accurate records and reports for all plant and transport.
• Maintain accurate records of fleet inventory, registrations, licenses, and insurance documentation.
• Organise LOLER examinations.
• Inspecting harnesses & lanyards before issue and on return.
• Approving plant and transport invoices as required.
• Coordinate with suppliers and vendors for the procurement of plant machinery, spare parts, and maintenance services.
• Ensure stores and yard areas are maintained in a safe, tidy and clean manner.
• Issue/return items to/from stores and yard in accordance with required procedures.
• Carry out monthly stock take and maintain stock levels.
• Order fuel.
• Monitor equipment and vehicle usage, fuel consumption, efficiency and productivity, and
provide reports and recommendations (e.g. to reduce fuel costs/carbon footprint) to senior management
• Manage the maintenance of the transportation fleet, including trucks, trailers, and other
vehicles.
• Develop and enforce policies and procedures for fleet operations, driver safety, vehicle
maintenance, and compliance with transportation regulations (e.g. road tax, MOT).
• Coordinate vehicle scheduling and dispatch to ensure timely delivery of equipment, materials, and personnel to construction sites.
• Delivering/collecting vehicles to or from garage/body shop/sites and other locations.
• Preparing vehicles and plant for sale and organising sale.
• In liaison with H&S department, investigate and report any accidents/incidents promptly and implement corrective measures as appropriate to prevent future occurrences.
• Undertake the role as the key contact person with insurers on all matters relating to transport and plant, e.g. including reporting accidents timeously.
• Provide training and guidance to drivers and equipment operators on safe operating practices and compliance with regulatory requirements.
• Collaborate with Project Managers, Site Supervisors and other stakeholders to understand equipment and transportation requirements for all projects.
• Schedule repairs, maintenance, and equipment availability to minimize downtime and delays.
• Communicate effectively with all required personnel to ensure smooth operations and resolve any issues or concerns promptly.
• Provide leadership and guidance regarding plant and transport matters and foster a culture of accountability, safety, and continuous improvement.
• Stay updated on all regulations related to plant and transportation operations, ensuring full compliance.
• Conduct regular safety inspections and implement safety protocols to minimise accidents and maintain a safe work environment.

Qualifications

• Driving licence - essential, preferably clean.
• Have, or be willing to work toward attaining, a Transport Manager CPC qualification.

Essential Criteria:
• Proven experience in plant and fleet management within the construction industry.
• Strong knowledge of construction plant machinery, equipment, and transportation operations
• Proficiency in using computerised maintenance management systems and fleet management
software.
• Good working knowledge and experience of Stores and Yard operations.
• Excellent organisational, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
• Effective verbal and written communication in English and interpersonal skills to collaborate with diverse teams.
• Ability to work under pressure, multitask, and prioritize tasks in a dynamic environment.
• Good working knowledge of computerised inventory systems.
• Working knowledge of the Construction and Civil Engineering industry.
• Competent level of Computer literacy including Microsoft office.
